Redskins Spring Practice 2003

By Jeff McQueen, Redskins statistician and "Voice of the Hill"

The Redskin football team conducted spring practice over a three week span, covering the 10 allotted days allowed by the TSSAA. Having no signal caller with varsity experience, coupled with last years lack of a passing game, the emergence of aerial assault weapons was paramount. Developing +100 yards passing per game is needed to balance the offense. Offensive coordinator, Ronnie Roberts, said “Cody Fritts, a sophomore, got the majority of the snaps this spring”. “He already possesses a good grasp of our offense, makes good decisions, and he will put the ball in the air”, Roberts continued. Running Backs Coach Clayton Stamey, is blessed with a stable of running backs, which averaged +200 yards rushing per game last year, all returning this fall. Although only two returning wide receivers have varsity receptions, Receivers Coach Scott Mackintosh, has a veteran group that has distinguished themselves as playmakers. “We caught the ball well, gained yards after the catch, and provided good down field blocking this spring”, Coach Mackintosh reported. Along with installing a few new defensive wrinkles, Head Coach Jeff Harig, liked the overall tone and demeanor of the team. “We displayed a lot of consistency this spring”, Harig said, “With a senior laden squad, I’m anxious to parlay our hard work this spring into a great fall campaign. The climax of spring practice was a scheduled scrimmage game at Rockwood on Friday, May 2nd. Although the spring game with Rockwood was rained out, Head Coach Jeff Harig and his wife Shannon, welcomed into the world a new addition to the Redskin family, Keaton Harig. Weighing in at six pounds and eight ounces, Keaton has an older brother, Jamison who is 3 years old. Congratulations.
