Redskins Four-Team Scrimmage August 2, 2003

On Saturday, August 2nd, the Loudon Redskins traveled to Cleveland for a four-way scrimmage with the 4A Cleveland Raiders, 5A Ooltewah Owls, and the Polk County Wildcats who are 2A.  Cleveland is a pre-season favorite to challenge Maryville for the state title and Ooltewah is the standing 2-5A regional champs.   A great morning for football with some solid teams anxious to see how they would match up.  With four thirty-minute sessions, the Redskins faced everyone with the fourth session being goal line offense and defense.

The 'Skins drew Cleveland first and went on offense.   Each team got ten plays before switching sides of the line.   Quarterback Cody Fritts was injured while on a roll-out waggle pass attempt.   Fearing a concussion, Fritts was held out the rest of the day.   Brandon Dixon assumed the QB duties. The play selection was three pass attempts and seven rushes.   Patric Johnson and Jake Brantley posted good runs. Switching to defense, the "Big Red" held their own against the Raiders. On play number ten, Cleveland broke a forty-yard TD run. Back on offfense, Loudon kept the ball on the ground, running all ten plays.

In the second session, we squared off with Ooltewah. Starting with defense, the Redskins got a bad break. While up in run support, #10 Sr. Timmy Guider (strong safety) broke his wrist making a tackle.   Guider will be side-lined for eight to twelve weeks. With the 'Skins now on offense, the front five seemed to pick it up a notch. The backs ripped off large chunks of real estate. The period ended with the "Big Red" offense marching down the field with the Owls unable to get any defensive stops.

On to Polk County.   The 'Skins continued their offensive success. On play four, Patric Johnson scored from sixty yards out.   The "Big Red" wall held the Wildcats in check. Time allowed another offensive and defensive series.   The goal line drill against Polk County had us swapping scores.   All and all, the scrimmage was a good initial start for the 2003 campaign.   Stepping were: defensive backs Keith Townson and Mark "P" Harrison making good stops, OL/DL Kyle Tallent tipped a pass that was intercepted by Matthew Packett.   J. Collier also got a pick.   The Redskins graded out with three fumbles, four penalties, threw one interception, gave up one big play, and forced two interceptions.

This Friday, August 8th, the 'Skins will host Rockwood and Claiborne County at 6:00 p.m. at Dukes Field.
