LOUDON LOSES THURSDAY NIGHT SHOWDOWN IN DOUBLE OVERTIME 25-22

(Oct. 26, 2002) By Jeff McQueen, the "Voice of the Hill"

The Loudon Redskins traveled to Gibbs for a rare Thursday night game. Both teams entered the contest with identical 3-5 records. The Redskins dominated the game statistically, holding the Eagles to -11 yards rushing and 30 yds passing in the first half. The Loudon defense sacked the Gibbs Quarterback 3 times for -24 yds, recovered 2 of the 6 Eagle fumbles, and blocked a punt. One of Gibbs 1st quarter fumbles was converted into 7 points as #31 Chris Hutchens pounded in from the 4-yd line. The ‘Skins take a 7-0 lead into the locker room.

Taking the 2nd half kick-off on the 2-yd line, #33 Jake Brantley raced up-field for a 68-yard return. This excellent scoring opportunity was squandered away by losing a fumble. Gibbs tied the game later in the 3rd period on a 12 yard run by #32 Dustin Moore. Both teams added to the score board in the 4th stanza. With his second touchdown pass of the season, #2 Chad Oody hooked up with #1 Patric Johnson for a 26 yard aerial. The extra point attempt fell apart with a bad snap and hold and was smothered by Gibbs. The Eagles scored on a 21 yd pass and catch to #32 Dustin Moore. With a good push by the ‘Skin defensive front, the extra point attempt was tipped and was no good. At the end of regulation, the score is knotted at 13.

The Skins won the toss in the 1st overtime period, and chose to go on offense. #1 Patric Johnson wasted little time and scored on the first play from the ten-yd line. Gibbs was guilty of off sides on the extra point attempt, and the ball was put on the 1 1/2-yard line. Head Coach Jeff Harig elected to go for two, but Gibbs stuffed the attempt. Now the Eagles have 4 plays from the 10-yd line. #32 Dustin Moore broke the goal line from 7 yards out. The kick by #9 Drew Payne was wide left. Tied at 19 points each, on to the 2nd O.T. period.

#22 Brent McNew gained 5 tough yards on the first play, but the ’Skin offense bogged down from there. #9 Adam Paramo booted a 22-yd field goal, to give Loudon the advantage. It was now up to the defense. The Redskins were penalized 5 yards for encroachment into the neutral zone. #32 Moore pounded out 4 yards. It’s second and game from the one-yard line. On a quarterback sneak, #10 Dane Daley scored to earn Gibbs the 25-22 double overtime victory. With this loss, Loudon’s record falls to 3 and 6.

In the final game of the season, the Redskins travel to Lenoir City for the annual battle-of-the-bridge.
