This will be the first of six regional games this season, as new comers to Region 2-2A, the Redskins will be facing a few new opponents this season. However, we are not strangers to the Wildcats. In fact this will be the 54th meeting between these two schools. The all time record breaks down like this: 32 wins, 19 losses, 2 ties (the outcome and score of the 1942 game is unknown) of course in favor of the Big Red. The ‘Cats have won the last three meetings; Coach Harig wants to reverse that trend, and the Redskins responded with a 19-0 victory, and go to 2-0 on the young season.

Out for the coin toss were Captains #3 Brandon Dixon, #4 Cody Fritts, #44 Matthew Packett, #53 Jimmy McQueen, and #79 John Paul Hackney. Loudon won the toss and wanted the ball.

With the #24 Josh Hawkins kick-off return of 25 yards, the Big Red offense was in business on the 31 yard line. On third and 3, the offense failed to convert. Back to punt, #4 Cody Fritts got off a 34 yarder, down to the 27 yard line. The ‘Cats earned a first down but fumbled, #61 Tim Ramsey came up with the loose football. It took six plays and just 2:03 for the Redskins to capitalize on that turn over. Fritts to Fritts was good for 20 yards, then #8 Tyler Campbell motored in from the 15 yard line for the score. Sweetwater returned the kick-off up to the 16 yard line. #21 Craig Latham reeled off 21 yards for a first down, three plays later the Blue & Gold fumbled again. #5 Taylor Eldridge threw the quarterback for a -13 yard loss, causing the fumble, Eldridge also promptly pounced on the loose pig skin. The Big Red offensive unit stalled out. After a penalty, the Reds attempted a 35 yard field goal; it was long enough but sailed wide right. #21 Cory Fritts foiled the next Wildcat possession with an interception, and Loudon turned the ball over on downs. Hawkins recovered a ‘Cat fumble. Sweetwater and Loudon swapped punts for the rest of the second period. Just before the half, Sweet punted from their own 18 yard line. Cory Fritts returned the 36 yard punt 30 yards down to the ‘Cats 24 yard line. With 7.7 seconds left in the half Cody Fritts threw the ball in the end zone where it was intercepted. Loudon takes a 7-0 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter was uneventful as neither team could gain an advantage. To emphasize the mounting disparity in penalties, Loudon’s mountain of yellow flags is quickly approaching -100 yards, while Sweetwater’s total was running less than half of that. The biggie of course was the half back pass from Hawkins to #87 Wiley Brakebill that went for a 45 yard touchdown in the second stanza; it was called back for offensive pass interference which is a loss of down penalty. The only excitement in the third period came when the Wildcats were forced to punt from their own 26 yard line. Cory Fritts returned the punt five yards up to the Loudon 44 yard line. The Redskins were on the move, five plays later it was first and 10 from the Sweetwater 15 yard line. The back judge tripped Cody Fritts for a -19 yard loss, and then sequential penalties moved the ball back until it was fourth and 47. Another scoring opportunity taken away, as Loudon punted.

Moving ahead to the fourth quarter, the Redskins assaulted the scoreboard twice. Hawkins scored from the five with 8:33 to go. Later in the final period, Hawkins broke a 40 yarder! The Monroe Co. Felines were finally worn down and de-clawed.

Defensively the Redskins have had their way with both opponents, holding Greenback and Sweetwater to a combined 43 yards rushing and 141 yards passing. Top defenders tonight were #81 Daniel Laughlin with five tackles, #61 Tim Ramsey back from an injury looked sharp and added three tackles and a fumble recovery, #21 Cory Fritts and #44 Matthew Packett recorded interceptions, #5 Taylor Eldridge and #24 Josh Hawkins also recovered fumbles.

In his post game address of the team, Coach Harig said, “I’m proud of you as a team, in the past we’ve found ways to loose tight games like this. It took a four quarter effort tonight…every game this season will too.”

The final score was 19-0, Redskins. Go Big Red!
