Oliver Springs Take II. Last week in the first round of the playoffs, all the Region 2 teams were victorious against the weaker Region 1 foes. So, that puts us on a collision course with the Bobcats for the second round of the playoffs. After the regular season homecoming victory over Oliver Springs in week #8 to the tune of 34-7, can the Redskins maintain their level of intensity? Will there be a letdown? How will we fair playing the same foe twice? It was exciting to see the Loudon team take the field for the second time this season in their retro red jerseys with contrasting white pants (Greenback was the other). Normally at home this season, the ‘Skins wore red on red with away games being white on white. The only other variation was the away games at Sweetwater and Rockwood where the Big Red wore white jerseys with red pants. Nice.

Out for the coin toss were Redskin Captains #3 Brandon Dixon, #4 Cody Fritts, #7 Mark Harrison, and #51 Clay Matlock. The Redskins won the toss and wanted the football.

The opening kick-off was returned 25 yards by #8 Tyler Campbell. First and 10 Big Red on the 34 yard line. The Oliver Springs coaching staff seemed determined to stop the run. With eight packed in the box, Fritts and Co. had a field day. The first play from scrimmage was a 51 yard Fritts to Fritts completion all the way down to the Bobcat 15 yard line. On the second play, #10 Ryan Queen hauled in a 15 yard Cody Fritts touchdown pass! Oliver Springs was off sides on the extra point attempt, so from the 1 1/2 yard line the ‘Skins go for two. #3 Brandon Dixon was stopped short, leaving the score 6-0 Loudon. Only 47 seconds have ticked off the clock. From this point on… it was all Redskins! 27 unanswered points were reeled off in rapid succession, bringing the half time score to 33-0!

Loudon would score on their next four possessions, while the Bobcats punted on four consecutive series. Fritts was good to Dixon on a six yard touchdown pass, then #24 Josh Hawkins posted scoring runs of 16, 14, and 8 yards. The offense drove down into the Red Zone, just before the half. Sputtering on consecutive incompletions from the four yard line, the Reds gave up the ball on downs. Six possessions were turned into five touchdowns, not bad.

The defense was playing superbly, allowing Oliver Springs just 42 yards of total offense in the first half!

Out for the second half, the Redskins picked up right where they left off - forcing a ‘Cat punt and Hawkins scoring his fourth touchdown of the game, a 12 yarder.

After #81 Daniel Laughlin tipped the 3rd down pass attempt, Olivers punted… again. And then the unthinkable happened the Redskins were forced to punt? Hawkins was racked up for no gain, coupled with two QB Fritts incomplete pass brought up 4th and 10. After a booming 43 yard punt by Cody Fritts, O.S. started on their own 18 yard line. Their go to running back is #26 Lynn Haynes, who has rushed for about 1700 yards this season. Haynes was good for 14 yards on 1st down. Then it was the fullback’s turn, #36 Joshua Justice, came barreling through the line. The Reds Laughlin had other ideas though; he took the football away from Justice and headed the other way!

There was 4:29 left in the 3rd period with the ball resting on the Bobcat 29 yard line. It took six plays, but the Redskins finally managed to drive the 29 yards required to cash that turnover into points. For the score, the Fritts to Fritts connection was again good, this time a 10 yarder. Man, am I going to miss saying that next season!

With 40 seconds left in the third, underclassmen took us the rest of the way. For Oliver Springs, Mr. Haynes managed a 30 yard touchdown and #1 David Collect scored on a reverse from eight yards out.

A plethora of records have been broken by the 2005 Redskin team this season. Congratulations to senior quarterback #4 Cody Fritts, who set a single game LHS passing record of 248 yards on 11 of 19 passing during the game tonight! The Redskins roll, racking up 414 yards of total offense. Carrying lots of momentum into next weeks rematch with the Tornados, the Redskins confidence is sky high! Game time is 7:00pm at Alcoa’s Bill Bailey Stadium for this third round TSSAA playoff game. Go Big Red!
