The Redskins (4-1, 2-2A) traveled to Roane Co. to tangle with the Kingston Yellow Jackets (3-2, 2-3A). The Jackets are a very familiar foe to the Big Red. In fact Loudon has played Kingston a total of 65 times in their storied history. Before tonight’s non-regional contest, the ‘Skins hold a 35-27-3 record against the Yellow Jackets. We have played Kingston every year since 1957. The Jackets own a three game winning streak verses Loudon, the Redskins will attempt to reverse that trend tonight. With the “Battle of the Bridge coming to an end, Kingston is the logical choice as our next big rival. With the advent of the inaugural Coach Jim “Hoot” Gibson Memorial Hall of Fame Bowl tonight, it’s set.

Out for the coin toss were Captains #3 Brandon Dixon, #4 Cody Fritts, #7 Mark Harrison, and #51 Clay Matlock. Loudon won the toss and wanted the football.

The kick-off carried down to the 10 yard line, #24 Josh Hawkins opened up with a 22 yard return. First and 10 Big Red on the 32 yard line. Loudon would grind out two first downs, but soon found themselves facing fourth down and 12 yards to go after a five yard penalty. #4 Cody Fritts pooch kicked down to the 15 yard line.

Kingston also earned two first downs on the legs of #34 Chad Johnson, but soon found themselves with down and distance problems as well. A booming punt by Kingston of 40 yards plus good downfield coverage held #21 Cory Fritts to a five yard return. From the 18 yard line, Loudon puts the ball in play. Hawkins is stripped and the Yellow Jackets recovered. But on their first play QB #10 Justin Givens returns the favor. Scooping up the loose pig skin was linebacker #44 Matthew Packett who rumbles 69 yards for the first score of the game! The first of four extra points was chalked up by #33 Justin Blevins.

That would be the only points of the first quarter, 7-0 Redskins.

Kingston fought back to match the Redskins with a 12 play drive that was capped by Johnson’s four yard dive. With the kick the score was tied at seven points each.

The Loudon quick strike offense went right to work. After #86 Jeremy Johnson got the ‘Skins off to a good start with a 33 yard kick-off return. Five plays and 3:08 later had Hawkins in the end zone, touchdown Redskins!

The Jackets were on the move; of the 10 plays in this drive, five of them were passes. That was one pass too many, as #21 Cory Fritts stepped in front of the intended receiver on the Redskin 15 yard line and rumbled 46 yards down to the Jacket 39 yard line.

Two plays yielded pay dirt. QB Fritts was back to pass and in trouble, he tucked the ball and scrambled up field. De-cleating blocks by #53 Jimmy McQueen, #3 Brandon Dixon, and #2 Ben Everett sprung Fritts for a 15 yard gain! This stellar play ignited the Redskin faithful, the visiting Redskin fans were rockin’. On the next play, #10 Ryan Queen hauled in a Cory Fritts pass for the remaining 24 yards, touchdown Loudon Redskins!

Kingston tried the hook and ladder play but time expired in the first half. Loudon takes a 21-7 lead into the locker room.

The most important series of the second half is always the first series. The Big Red Wall was up to the challenge and forced a Jacket punt. Loudon held the momentum for most of the first half, and stopping Kingston on that first series continued that trend.

After that defensive stop, the Red offense went right to work. It totally deflated the Kingston squad when the Redskins pounded in the final score of the game, a 12 yard scamper by #8 Tyler Campbell.

In the first annual Coach Jim “Hoot” Gibson Memorial Hall of Fame Bowl, a traveling trophy will be presented to the winning team each year. The Gibson family was on hand for a pre-game ceremony that celebrated the life of the late Jim “Hoot” Gibson. Coach Gibson was a dedicated educator and coach for some 38 years. As the former principal and defensive coordinator of Loudon High School, from 1972 until 1975, Coach Gibson was instrumental in the two State Championships in 1974 and 1975. The Gibson family has set up the James H. Gibson Hall of Fame Scholarship to provide educational opportunities for student-athletes at Carson-Newman College, Coach Gibson’s alma mater. After their resounding 28-7 victory, Kingston Mayor Troy Beets presented the traveling trophy to Jeff Harig Head Coach of the Loudon Redskins.

In his post game address of the team, Coach Harig said, “We came in here and we were their homecoming opponent, our second in a row. You played hard for four quarters, when you beat Kingston 28-7 at their place that’s a measuring stick for your program…that’s how far you know you’ve come this season! On our homecoming tour we’re now 2-0, and we have two more (homecomings) to go. So we’ve got to take care of business.”

The final score was 28-7, Redskins (5-1). Go Big Red!
