Three scrimmage games, the “Henry Blackburn Memorial Jamboree”, and now the week No. 1 season opener against the Greenback Cherokees won by the Redskins 50-15, and everyone is still asking the same question? Are we that good, or are they that bad? That question will finally get answered sometime in the next three weeks. Traveling to Sweetwater, hosting Lenoir City and the reigning State Champion Alcoa Tornados should test the mettle, character, and will of the ‘Skins. One thing is certain; the 2005 Redskins are the most balanced team Loudon has fielded in many years.

Out for the coin toss were Captains #3 Brandon Dixon, #5 Taylor Eldridge, #7 Mark Harrison, and #51 Clay Matlock. Loudon won the toss and wanted the ball.

#21 Cory Fritts fielded the opening kick-off on the 19 and returned it up to the 38 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage #24 Josh Hawkins started off tackle, and then broke wide down the sideline, 62 yards later he was standing alone in the end zone! Hold it… what’s that a yellow flag lying on the ground? A block in the back negated that fine touchdown run. The next two plays yielded just four rushing yards; two incomplete passes followed. The Redskins turned the ball over on downs, the Cherokees took over on their own 30 yard line. The Big Red wall forced Greenback three and out. Punting from the 33 yard line should give the ‘Skins excellent field position - it did. After a 24 yard punt and a four yard return by #21 Cory Fritts, the Big Red had the ball first and ten on their own 43 yard line. This time the touchdown counted. On third and six, quarterback #4 Cody Fritts slipped a pass out in the flat to Hawkins. J-Hawk did the rest as he ate up 53 yards of real estate! After the Cherokee penalty, the ball was spotted on the 1½ yard line, #3 Brandon Dixon took off wide left for the 2-point conversion. The clock showed 6:11 left in the first quarter. The ensuing kick-off bounced into the end zone for a touchback, so Greenback started on the 20 yard line. On three attempts, the Cherokees lost two yards, so they were punting. The snap sailed right through the punters hands, he was able to hustle back and cover the live ball resulting in a safety. Before the first quarter expired, Loudon would score two more times. Cody Fritts would hook up with #2 Ben Everett on a four yard touchdown pass and Hawkins added a 25 yard rushing touchdown. 24-0 ‘Skins, after one stanza of play.

The second period was even better? That’s right the Big Red padded their first quarter exploits with 26 more points! The potent Fritts to Fritts combination was good for a 50 yard pitch and catch. Digging into the play book, Coach Roberts the offensive coordinator sends in the play, a half back pass. Hawkins starts right and lofts a perfect spiral to Cory Fritts; it was good for 19 yards and a touchdown. The Cherokees gave up the ball on downs at their own 39 yard line, Loudon made quick work of the short field. Cody Fritts covered the last two yards on a keeper. Sometimes when things go bad, they really go bad. The kick-off was fielded on the eight yard line; but the deep back never quite got the handle. Hustling down quickly in coverage was Everett who scooped and scored from the eight yard line. Meanwhile Greenback has punted or given up the football on downs every possession, except for the lone score they managed in the first half. The Redskins have been playing at Dukes field for 40 years, the 50 points scored in the first half by the Redskins set a new LHS record.

Underclassmen played the entire second half for the Redskins. The Cherokees scored their second touchdown late in the game as the final seconds ticked off.

In an amazing display of offensive prowess, three Redskins scored two touchdowns each - Josh Hawkins, Ben Everett, and Cory Fritts; on the defensive side of the ball senior linebacker #44 Matthew Packett logged nine knock downs while sophomore nose man #59 Bo Harrison added five stops and a sack. The final score was 50-15, Redskins. Go Big Red!
