The victor of this regional game is in the driver’s seat to be the #1 seed come playoff time. The road to Murfreesboro pasted through Alcoa last season, and as the defending State 2AA Champions, the Tornados are almost everyone’s pick to repeat.

We are not strangers to the Tornados as many memorable games have been played between these two teams in the past. This will be the 40th meeting between these two schools. The all time record is: 16 wins, 20 losses, and 3 ties. Alcoa is one of the few teams we have a loosing record against. Our last meeting was in 2000, when the Tornados put the Redskins out of the playoffs by a score of 26-2.

Out for the coin toss were Redskin Captains #3 Brandon Dixon, #7 Mark Harrison, #24 Josh Hawkins, and #51 Clay Matlock. The Redskins won the toss and wanted the ball.

The Alcoa kick-off was a touchback, Loudon started on the 20 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage #10 Ryan Queen fumbled, the Tornados recovered and took over on the Redskin 16 yard line. #2 Dustin Lindsey rushes for 11 yards and then five more as he goes into the end zone for the touchdown.

On their first series, Loudon goes three and out. #4 Cody Fritts gets off a 41 yard punt. With the 18 yard return, the Tornados are in business on the 44 yard line. The Loudon defense stiffened, forcing Alcoa to punt. #44 Matthew Packett, #50 Daniel Hampton, and #7 Mark Harrison led the defensive charge. The 38 yard punt pinned the Redskins down on their own six yard line.

With a gutsy call, the Fritts to Fritts pitch and catch was good for 32 yards and a first down. Three plays later Loudon was punting again. Alcoa set up shop on the 34 yard line. On the first play, #1 Brandon Warren catches a short pass and turns it into a 66 yard touchdown.

Now it’s the second period, Alcoa is on the move again. Lindsey scoots 48 yards for the third touchdown of the game.

The Redskins put together a solid drive spanning 16 plays and burning 9:17 off of the clock. The only problem was the Reds didn’t score. There were several big plays: #21 Cory Fritts rushed for 22 yards on third down, Hawkins gained 13 yards on third down, Packett failed to convert on 2nd and one and 3rd and one, then Cody Fritts snuck eight yards for the first down. Hawkins fumbled, tackle #53 Jimmy McQueen pounced on the loose ball to keep things going. A few plays later, and it’s now fourth and goal from the six yard line, Cody Fritts is back to pass - but it’s broken up in the end zone. A major scoring opportunity thwarted by the Alcoa “D”. The clock shows 2:29 before half time; Alcoa takes over on downs, the Big Red Wall holds them at bay until time expires.

At the intermission, the Tornados are leading 21-0.

Lindsey would score his third touchdown on a four yard run in the third stanza.

The ‘Skins had one more good opportunity late in the fourth stanza to score on the Alcoa defense, but field position again played a factor. 12 plays and 7:00 minutes didn’t yield any points.

The Tornados made it tougher this time, as they punted down to the Redskin one yard line. #3 Brandon Dixon bullied us off the goal line. Campbell for eight yards and Cody Fritts passed to #81 Daniel Laughlin for 15 yards. To the air again, Cody Fritts hooks up with Campbell for eight more. It’s now fourth down, Cody Fritts flips a little shovel pass out to Packett that was spotted just inches short of a first down! All the Tornados had to do now was just run a few plays and take a knee. That’s the ball game folks.

The Redskins held their own against the #1 2AA team in the state. Bad field position limited the Big Red offensive production; of course the Alcoa defense had something to do with that also. Alcoa is as advertised; Warren and Lindsey are for real. In a tough defensive game the Redskins hold the Tornados to 299 yards of total offensive.

Coach Harig told the team, “Hold your heads up men, we have nothing to be embarrassed about tonight. I fully expect we’ll see Alcoa again in November”.

The final score was 28-0, Tornados (4-1). The Redskins (3-1) travel to Polk Co. this Friday for a non-regional contest. Go Big Red!
